Archaeological Adventure in La Paz, Mexico

The arid climate of Baja has protected ancient human artifacts from the elements, making La Paz a draw for explorers of the past as well as present.  14,000 year-old cave paintings created by the Cochimi Indians are located only a short distance from La Paz, and the Museo de Antropología in the city hosts exhibits on the geological and cultural history of the area.

Hiking in La Paz, Mexico

Day hikes are abundant in the area for either self-guided or tour-guided trips. About 45 minutes south of the city, travelers can find a 124-acre cactus sanctuary filled with dozens of species of native cacti and the wildlife they sustain.

North of La Paz, on the Pichilingue Peninsula you will find trails that are perfect for day hikes and can direct you right to some secluded beautiful beaches. If you are looking for a more extensive hike, try out the Laguna Mountains south of La Paz. It is advised that you hire a guide if you are not an expert hiker because there is not a definite maintained trail. On the Pacific side of the peninsula, a multi-day hike out of Todos Santos climbs to 5,000 feet to alpine meadows, pine trees and scenic vistas. Take three different canyon routes that cross the Sierra de la Lagunas east to west for an exciting and challenging hike through cottonwoods and sub alpinemeadows – totally different from the arid environment below.
